UK blood sugar target ranges (mmol/L)

What counts as in range depends on the type of diabetes and when you tested. These are general UK targets from Diabetes UK and NICE – your own targets are agreed with your diabetes team.

WhoWaking / before mealsAfter meals
Adults, type 15 to 7 on waking; 4 to 7 before other meals5 to 9
Children, type 14 to 75 to 9
Adults, type 24 to 7Under 8.5
In pregnancyBelow 5.3 (fasting)Below 7.8 at 1 hour
No diabetes / prediabetes goal4.0 to 5.4Under 7.8

The two lines that matter for everyone

Below 4.0 mmol/L is a hypo and needs treating straight away (“4 is the floor”). At 15 mmol/L or above, especially with type 1, you may need to check for ketones.

Getting a reading you can trust

Wash and dry your hands first – food or juice on your fingers can read falsely high. Use in-date strips and enough blood. More in Testing at home and Understanding your numbers.
